This Memorial Day weekend, Helio Castroneves wins another Indy but places second at the Search box; Susan Boyle advances to the final round on “Britain’s Got Talent;” and a small bomb blast in front of Starbucks unnerves New Yorkers.

Susan Boyle, redux

Get set for another round of Boyle , everyone. Susan Boyle advanced to the final round of “Britain’s Got Talent” on Sunday by singing “Memory” from the musical “Cats.” The 48-year-old Scottish spinster, whose golden voice housed in a frumpy frame has provided a perfect object lesson in lookism, became a worldwide sensation when her first performance on the show, singing Les Misérable’s “I Dreamed a Dream,” was viewed on YouTube more than 60 million times. Simon Cowell even apologized to her, Sunday, for treating her disrespectfully — before she opened her mouth, that is — during her first appearance. Boyle will compete against other finalists on Saturday.

helio_castronevesCastroneves wins Indy, Patrick takes Search

On Sunday, Helio Castroneves may have become only the ninth driver to win the Indy 500 three times, but at the Search box he had to eat the dust of Danica Patrick. While interest in Castroneves surged, the real fast and furious queries registered for Patrick, who came in third Sunday, the best finish yet for a female. Castroneves received just a fraction of the look-ups of Patrick, but to be fair, no one was searching for him in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. Many were interested in Castroneves’ recent tax evasion case; he was acquitted of most charges on April 17, with the last count thrown out just two days before his Indy triumph. Now only A.J. Foyt, Al Unser, and Rick Mears stand ahead of Castroneves in Indy wins, with four each.

At 3:30 a.m., Monday, an improvised bomb caused a small but frightening explosion at the corner of 92nd Street and Third Avenue on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, shattering the windows of a Starbucks and destroying a sidewalk bench. No one was injured, but residents above the coffee shop were evacuated. ABC News is reporting that one witness noticed two teenagers running in front of the shop around the same time as the blast.

Also this weekend…

* The world reacts to North Korea’s nuclear bomb test.
* President Obama tried to defuse a Memorial Day controversy over the traditional sending of a wreath to a Confederate Civil War memorial by also sending flowers to a memorial for African Americans who fought in that conflict.
* Clay Aiken offered an apology, of sorts, for criticizing the singing of fellow American idol Adam Lambert.
